About our School

Columbia Secondary is a selective, public, college prep school with a focus on science, math, and engineering. Its program of study provides a challenging academic experience that prepares its students for selective colleges, for careers in science, math and engineering, and for a life of civic engagement and ethical responsibility. Already one of the city’s elite middle schools, Columbia Secondary aspires to become a world class secondary institution. We intend to train a new generation of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, who are socially and politically conscious, who are aware of their responsibility to their communities and the world, and who are dedicated to a life of creation and discovery in the service of humanity. The school is a joint endeavor between Columbia University and the New York City Department of Education. Columbia Secondary will be small, with approximately 650 6th-12th  grade students, once it reaches full capacity. In addition to a rigorous core subject program emphasizing Math, Science, and Technology, students also take Philosophy and Engineering courses.

Advanced Placement courses will be offered as early as 10th grade. Diverse, activities-based Electives, Creative Arts, and Physical Education programs, as well as a unique, June mini-semester study abroad/domestic field expedition program, round out the students’ learning experience. By their junior year, students may be able to take advantage of Columbia University’s vast undergraduate course offerings.
