Teaching at Columbia Secondary
Qualifications
Columbia Secondary School, a new 6-12th grade public school for talented students from the upper Manhattan communities seeks highly qualified, passionate teachers to be part of the school’s planning team and to potentially become founding 4th year faculty. We are specifically interested in teacher candidates with graduate degrees in education and appropriate field of specialty, avid interest and knowledge in science-math or engineering, life or academic experiences in international settings (e.g. travel, study or living abroad), interdisciplinary training or interests, and a commitment to rigorous progressive-constructivist educational practices. Intellectual curiosity, a humanistic world outlook, the capacity to work in teams and be a school leader, and a commitment to professional excellence are requisites. Bilingual proficiency (English –Spanish) and experience working with diverse students in urban settings is highly desirable. Because the founding faculty is intimately involved in all aspects of building a new secondary school community, we are interested in teachers who are leaders and creative risk takers, and who do not fear the extra responsibilities that come with building a new school. CSS faculty will enjoy being part of the Columbia University academic community and benefit from having access to the university’s vast educational, recreational and cultural resources. All faculty will serve as advisors and co-teach a Philosophy and Elective course, hence we are seeking individuals with interdisciplinary academic backgrounds, prior experience, or dual certification in the following areas:

About our School
Columbia Secondary is a selective, public, college prep school with a focus on science, math and engineering. Its program of study provides a challenging academic experience that prepares its students for selective colleges, for careers in science, math and engineering, and for a life of civic engagement and ethical responsibility. Already one of the city’s elite middle schools, Columbia Secondary aspires to become a world class secondary institution. We intend to train a new generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers, who are socially and politically conscious, who are aware of their responsibility to their communities and the world, and who are dedicated to a life of creation and discovery at the service of humanity. The school is a joint endeavor between Columbia University and NYCDOE. Columbia Secondary will be small, with approximately 650 6th-12th grade students, when it operates at full capacity. In addition to a rigorous core subject program emphasizing math, science and technology; students are required to take Philosophy and Engineering as core courses. A full complement of Advanced Placement courses will be offered as early as 9th grade. A diverse activities-based Electives, Creative Arts and Physical Education programs, a unique June mini-semester study abroad and field expeditions programs, rounds out the student’s learning experience. By graduation students may be able to take advantage of Columbia University’s vast undergraduate course offerings.
Additional information may be obtained at our website www.colulmbiasecondary.org.
Salary and Benefits
Will follow new NYCDOE ranges ($45,000 – $100,000 depending on experience and preparation, health and retirement benefits and possibly supplemented with after school, administrative and summer stipends). CSS-MSE faculty enjoy being members of the Columbia University academic community. Faculty enjoy a range of benefits unusual for public schools including support for travel to professional meetings and membership to professional organization of their choice, their own instructional budget, generous instructional resources, laptop, and tuition reimbursement at Columbia University. Core faculty own their classrooms which have dedicated smart boards and projectors, a 2:1 student to laptop ratio, and ample laboratory equipment. Our school’s growth provides exciting opportunities for faculty to design their own unique classroom environments and develop novel electives, creative arts, and field and travel abroad courses.
