Sign up here for a mind-blowing science demonstration at 309 Havemeyer, Columbia Main Campus, on Satuday, Saturday, Dec 13, from 10 - 11 am.

Kids and their curious parents and professors are invited to join Professors Colin Nuckolls and James Leighton in exploring the thrilling and fascinating world of polymers, from the useful to the just plain silly as they create science magic using the building blocks of the universe: molecules!

Because of limited space, attendance is limited to 90 seats. Families who have signed up will be contacted via email with a confirmation of your reservation.
If we receive multiple reservations from a single family, we will only honor the most recent submission.

This is a collaborative event between The School at Columbia and The Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science & Engineering. Thanks to Lisbeth Uribe, at The School, CU Professor Colin Nuckolls, and Jessica Marshall, Director of Communications at The School for including CSS in this fantastic event and doing the lion's share of the work in setting it up!

CSS Students Offer Choice Words at Barnes and Noble Event

On Saturday, November 22, over fifty CSS students wowed audience members at the CSS Read Out Loud Barnes & Noble performance! Sixth and seventh graders took the Barnes and Noble stage for the second time (last spring marked our debut reading!) and shared original works created in their first quarter at CSS. Students truly showed off the wide-range of courses offered at CSS through their diverse selection of readings.

No Classes or P-T Conferences on Election Day

We are revising our previously announced schedule to observe the NYCDOE calendar, which calls for a "Professional Development Day" on Tuesday, Nov. 4th with NO STUDENTS in attendance. In addition, because our teachers need time in the evening to vote, we will NOT be having Parent-Teacher conferences the evening of the 4th.

FYI: The handful of parents who slated conferences on the 4th will be contacted by our office staff to reschedule.

Sorry for the confusion. Please spend some time on the 4th to savor this vastly historic election with your children!

Principals' Awardees Enjoy a Feast Befitting of Scholars

Last Thursday evening, Dr. Maldonado and Professor Marin (Parent and Admissions Coordinator), and the class of 2014 Principal Awardee's - dressed up and went out for a celebratory dinner at the Dinosaur Barbecue Restaurant in Mahanttanville, near the lot where our future school building will be built. The dinner event recognized 21 students with the highest grade point average - that is, those who demonstrated the highest level of academic performance of our school.

STAR Program Nurtures Leader-Engineers

This summer at CSS the StudenT AmbassadoR (STAR) Program launched with a two-week summit. The STAR Program is a new student leadership program for environmental stewardship. This school year the STARs will take on an important environmental issue in Harlem and use engineering to address that issue.

School Leadership Team Elections

Columbia Secondary School is in the process of forming it's school leadership team (SLT). The SLT is a committee that will meet bi-weekly to provide consultation to the principal. The team will include three parents, as well as students and teachers.

The following five parents are interested in the position. Please click on the name to learn more about each candidate before casting your vote.

Ballots were sent home on Friday, April 4th. Please return them to school by April 8th.

The ballot is also attached below (in case you need to replace a lost one).

This Thursday from 6-8PM, CSS-MSE's founding 6th grade class held it's first-ever school dance. The moves on the floor provided a resounding YES in response to Prof. Hill's elective title "So you think you can dance?"

Comic Book Writer Brainstorms with ELA Students

Last week, Jake Black, a comic book writer (and uncle of CSS student, Kit McArthur), visited Professor Hill's English Language Arts classes for a Question and Answer session and a workshop in storytelling. Black is a writer of television (including Smallville and Ninja Turtles) and writes for DC and Marvel C

Family Potluck and Exhibition: A Good Time Had

On Friday, December 14th, the CSS-MSE community enjoyed it's third-ever family Potluck, this time with performances and exhibits from the electives and arts classes. More than 150 students, parents and siblings attended, bringing their favorite dishes or contributing paper goods, snacks, or volunteer help in setting up the event.
