Staffmember BioAs you may already know, I hail from the great state of Maine--specifically, a really big-small place we call "The County". Aroostook County Maine is larger than Rhode Island but has a smaller population than most large towns. I have always taught with a small town mentality--everyone is an individual and should be educated as such. I am of mixed racial heritage and have always given careful attention to the cultural contexts that have an impact on learning. I studied under a protégé of the Brazilian founder of ethno-mathematics, Ubiratan D’Ambrosio. Culture, ethics, and character are at the heart of all of my teaching. I have worked in engineering and science (from computer technology to aquaculture to chem-bio warfare) and owned a construction company. Through these experiences I gained a full understanding of the importance and relevance of applied mathematics as well as "good old-fashioned" content. Teaching mathematics has very little to do with "math wars", trends, or fashion. It's what we call "good horse sense" where I am from. We explore, we learn, and we master ideas and content through as many different methods as are required to know that we know what we are doing. Outside of the mathematics classroom I teach sociology, and facilitate two programs that are dear to me: (1) Operation Breaking Stereotypes and (2) The Future Teachers Academy. I am currently writing a book about accurate "real life" application problem solving in mathematics. I have also contributed to two mathematics textbooks series and authored a cookbook. Regarding my credentials, I hold numerous degrees, specializations, and certificates. I was recently named a Master Teacher Finalist, and was also honored for ranking in the top 15% of teachers nationwide for mathematics content knowledge.
