President of Dominican Republic visits school

I wanted to share with all my welcome speech during last weeks special event in which the President of Dominican Republic visited our school.

Ojala que llueva café en el campo – un llamado a la justicia social,  al mejoramiento de nuestros pueblos, a que no nos olvidemos de los mas necesitados…un mensaje importante en estos tiempos de crisis financieras…Gracias mis estudiantes por recordarnos….A call to social justice, to the improvement of our nations, that we not forget those in greatest need… an important message for all to think about in these times of financial crisis…thank you my students for this reminder…

Buenas tardes a todos y bienvenidos.      Good afternoon and welcome…

Quiero en primer lugar agradecer Al Presidente Leonel Fernandez-Reyna, a la Primera Dama la Dra. Margarita Cedeno  y al Ministro de Educación el Licenciado Melaneo Paredes, y al Secretario de Estado

por honrarnos con su presencia hoy día. Sabemos lo ocupada que debe estar su agenda con la reunión de Lideres del Mundo en nuestra hermana institución Columbia University y en las Naciones Unidas.

Además quiero agradecer a todos los otros profesionales de la educación que también se encuentran presentes.

I also want to thank all other educators who have graced us today with their presence.

Pero sobre todo quiero aprovechar la presencia de nuestros ilustres invitados…

But above all I want to take advantage of the presence of our illustrious guests….

el Presidente como líder de la gran América nuestra que lucha por acertar su presencia en nuestro planeta, por exigir que su voz se escuche en los confines del mundo,

the President as a leader of the American continent that struggles for its voice to be heard throughout our planet,

a la Primera Dama Dra. Margarita Cedeno quien representa la mujer hispana moderna , educada en leyes, madre ejemplar, líder en su propio derecho, y además con mis excusas al Sr. Presidente, muy bella.

to the first lady, Dra. Margarita Cedeno, who represents the modern Hispanic woman, trained as a lawyer, exemplary mother, a leader in her own right, and in addition with the President's permission, very beautiful.

y al Ministro de Educación el Licenciado Melanio Paredes, que representa los deseos de superación intelectual de nuestros pueblos…

                to the Minister of Education, who represent the hopes of intellectual development of our countries.

…..pare dirigir un mensaje a mis estudiantes, en particular - a mis estudiantes hispanos – estos jóvenes héroes de nuestra patria Latinoamericana que componen la mayoría del estudiantado de nuestra escuela Columbia Secondary.  Sobre ustedes recae una única e increíble oportunidad – al ser miembros de la única escuela especializada de ciencias y matemáticas de la ciudad en que los hispanos somos mayoría.  Ustedes representan lo mejor de nuestra juventud - los deseos de superación y excelencia de una nueva generación.  Ustedes serán los futuros lideres de nuestro mundo y por ende es sobre ustedes que recaerá la enorme responsabilidad de enderezar este planeta al que tanto daños le hemos hecho. Para eso necesitan prepararse intelectualmente y esto se logra con dedicación, esfuerzo y sacrificio. Para construir patria, mejorar nuestras sociedades, resolver los enigmas de la ciencia,  y solucionar los problemas de este mundo necesitan sobre todo: dedicación, esfuerzo y sacrificio.  Para ser buenos ciudadanos, moralmente comprometidos con el bienestar propio y el ajeno, necesitan: dedicación, esfuerzo y sacrificio. Comprométanse con esto y verán como, en este rico universo, se le abrirán nuevos e importantes caminos para construir y contribuir en esta la gran aventura que es la vida…

…to direct a message to my students and particularly my Hispanic students who compose the majority of CSS’s student body – these young heroes of our country. It is upon you that rest a unique and incredible opportunity as  members of the only science, math and engineering school  in the city where Hispanic students are a majority. You represent the best of our youth, the aspirations of excellence of a new generation. You are the future leaders of this world and it is upon you that lays the enormous responsibility of fixing our planet which we have so damaged. For this awesome task you must prepare yourselves intellectually and to accomplish this you need dedication, sacrifice and effort. To build a better world, improve our societies, resolve the big questions of the universe and solve the problems of our planet you need above all, dedication, sacrifice and effort. To be good citizens, morally committed to the good of all and the good of self, you will need: dedication, sacrifice and effort. Commit yourselves to a life of dedication, sacrifice and effort and you will see how new paths open in this wondrous universe, how news paths to contribute will open before you in the incredible adventure that is the human experience…  

A los adultos de esta nación, y de tantas otras, responsables por proveerles a estos jóvenes talentosos, le pido, es mas les ruego, que provean los recursos necesarios para que estos jóvenes tengan una educación digna y correspondiente a sus especiales capacidades y talentos. Estos jóvenes brillantes – los mejores académicamente de nuestro pueblo, no merecen que se les den los mínimos de recursos educativos existentes. Por el contrario estos jóvenes deben ser tratados como las joyas que son, como el futuro de nuestros pueblos. Estos estudiantes merecen, y necesitan una educación especial, una educación enriquecida que estimule y nutra en acorde a sus muy especiales potencialidades. En esta época de difíciles recortes presupuestarios, no nos olvidemos de ellos, no dejemos que la subcorriente de anti-intelectualismo existente resulte en el abandono de nuestros  estudiantes talentosos.

And to the adults of this and other nations, responsible for providing the talented youths, I ask, I beg, that you provide the necessary resources to support these brilliant students with an education appropriate for their special talents and intellectual capacities. The gifted youth of our world – those with the highest academic potential, do not deserve the meager resources you are now providing. On the contrary these youth should be treated as the special jewels they are for our society and for our future. These students deserve a highly enriched education in accord with their special needs and talents. In these times of financial crisis it is tempting to forget about them, but let us not allow this sub current of anti-intellectualism that so pervades our nation, result in the abandonment of these gifted children.

Ahora les dejo con la lectura de cartas que nuestros estudiantes le dirigen al Presidente ……y seguido de esto un dialogo entre los estudiantes y el Presidente….
