APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of March 11 were not ready.They will be read and approved at the next CSS/PA meeting.

TREASURER'S REPORT: PA treasurer Victor Acosta reported that there is $879.93 in the PA's bank account.

Reporte del Tesorero: El tesorero del PA Victor Acosta reporto que al presente hay $879.93 el la cuenta bancaria del PA.

FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE REPORT: Biiftu Aba-Jabel and Damaris Padilla reported that the fundraising committee currently comprised of Biiftu Aba-Jebel, Noemi Abreau, and Damaris Padilla met on the evening of March 27 met to brainstorm the various ways that the PA could help raise money for CSS and the PA. They discussed registering CSS for BOXTOPS, Target and goodsearch.com; getting money through tonor/ink cartridge and cellphone recycling; a boatride fundraiser for the adults; a Chucky Cheese fundraiser and a raffle.They also talked about funding school projects through donorschoose.org. The committee also felt that it was critical for the PA to get 501(3) (c) status in order to start aggressively engaging in direct solicitations for goods and cash from businesses in the community and families. At the comittee meeting, Bifftu agreed to contact Miriam about the status of the 501(3) (c) application. Noemi agreed to further explore the Chucky Cheese idea and other fundraising ideas with the student government. Damaris agreed to get Dr. Maldonado's approval to register CSS with Boxtops and goodsearch.com. and to find out if the school is currently recycling tonor/ink cartridges and cellphones to raise money for CSS. Miriam advised Bifftu that the 501 (3) (c) application is pending. Dr. Maldonado gave his approval for BOXTOPS and goodsearch.com. and tonor recycling. Damaris therefore registerd CSS with BOXTOPS and godsearch.com. We, however, need a volunteer to take on the tonor/ink/cellphone recycling. Damaris and Biftu also reported that the committee also felt that the PA should also collect PA dues from families. It was felt that a small amount per family would be a good way to get necessary cash for postage, etc. Damaris reviewed the Chancellor's Regulations and the CSS by-laws. Both allow for PA dues as long as it is made clear to the members that payment of dues is not a condition of membership.

Reporte del Comite Para Recudar Fondos

El Comite Para Recaudar Fondos, el cual consiste de Biiftu Aba-Jebel, Noemi Abreu, y Damaris Padilla, se reunio la tarde del 27 de marzo para explorar ideas para ver como el PA puede ayudar a recaudar fondos para CSS y el PA. Ellas discutieron las ideas de registrar a la escuela para BOXTOPS y goodsearch.com, obteniendo dinero devolviendo los cartuchos de tinta y los teléfonos móvil, teniendo un paseo en barcos para los adultos, un evento con Chucky Cheese y una rifa. También hablaron sobre obtener dinero para proyectos de la escuela por medio de donorschoose.org. El comite penso que es muy importante que el PA obtenga el status de 501 (3) (c) para que así el PA pueda solicitar agresivamente dinero y artículos de los negocios y las familias. En la reunión del comite, Biiftu acordo hablar con Miriam sobre el status de la aplicación del 501 (3) (c). Noemi acordo explorar la idea de Chucky Cheese y otras maneras de recaudar fondos con el gobierno estudiantil. Damaris acordo pedirle permiso al Dr. Maldonado para registrar a CSS con BOXTOPS y goodsearch.com y obtener dinero devolviendo los cartuchos y teléfonos móvil para recudar fondos para CSS. Miriam le aviso a Biiftu que la aplicación para el status 501 (3) (c) esta pendiente. El Dr. Maldonado estuvo de acuerdo que se registre la escuela con BOXTOPS y goodserach.com y que se obtenga fondos devolviendo los cartuchos. Por lo tanto Damaris registro a CSS con BOXTOPS Y goodsearch.com. Pero se necesita un voluntario para que se haga cargo del programa de devolver los cartuchos y teléfonos móvil a cambio de dinero para CSS. Damaris y Biiftu también reportaron que el comite penso que el PA deberia colectar una cuota de las familias. Se piensa que una cuota pequeña de cada familia seria una manera buena de obtener fondos necesarios como para gastos del correo. Damaris reviso las Regulaciones del Canciller y los reglamentos del PA y ambos permiten cuotas despues que pagar la cuota no sea una condición de ser miembro del PA.

PA DUES:

The parents present had a lively discussion about the need to assess PA dues. Candy Gulko sated that aggressive fundraising would perhaps be preferrable to dues. Others felt that these are a good idea as long as the dues are kept small and it is clear that paying them is not a condition of membership. Profesor Nalley suggested that there be a donors list to keep track of donations. Others suggested that dues be kept track of by hall and the hall with the highest percentage of dues paid be given a pizza party. Professor Nalley also suggested that a letter go out to parents stating that dues are a seed donation from each family, that the letter mention the various needs and that paying dues is not a condition of membership. Damaris moved that dues in the amount of $25.00 per family be set by the PA.The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.Damaris agreed to get a letter out to familias about the dues in the near future.

Cuotas del PA :

Los padres presente tuvieron un a discusión animada sobre la necesidad de imponer una cuota para las familias del PA. Candy Gulko dijo que recaudar fondos agresivamente seria más preferible que imponer cuotas.Otros pensaron que esta es una buena idea despues que la cuota sea pequeña y se haga muy claro que pagar la cuota no es una condición de ser miembro del PA. El profesor Nalley sugerio que se haga una lista de los donantes.Otros sugerierón que se mantega cuenta de las contribuciones por clase y que se le de una fiesta de pizza a la clase con el porcentage más grande de cuotas pagadas. El Profesor Nalley sugerio que se le escriba una carta a los padres explicando que la cuota es "seed money" para empesar, describiendo las varias necesidades de la escuela y que el pagar la cuota no es una condición de ser miembro. Damaris presento la moción para que se imponga una cuota de $25.00 para cada familia. La moción paso unánimemente. Damaris acordo escribir una carta en el futuro próximo explicandole la las familias la cuota.

AMMEMDMENTS TO BY-LAWS:

Miriam Hubbard explained that the PA by-laws have to be ammended to reflect that the term of service for a parent representative on the SLT is for 2 years so long as the representative's child is enrolled in school. Judith Rosario made a motion to ammend the bylaws to reflect this. Victor Acosta seconded the motion and it passed unanimously by a vote of the parents present.

Enmiendas a Los Reglamentos

Miriam Hubbard explico que los reglamentos del PA tienen que ser enmendados para reflejar que el termino de servicio para padres representantes del SLT es de dos años siempre y cuando el hijo/a del padre representante del SLT este matriculado en la escuela. Judith Rosario hizo una moción para que se enmiende los regalamentos del PA para que reflejen este cambio. Victor Acosta secundo la moción y esta paso unanimemente por un voto de los padres presente.

SAFETY PROBLEMS:

Adam Stern spoke about an incident that he and other parents were confronted with when they were leaving the last PA meeting. There were adolescent kids being disrespectful and bullying the adults. Parents asked what could be done to better ensure our students safety at dismissal, especially on days when our kids are in school late, for example ,working on projects. Some parents suggested that having someone from the NYPD talk to students at an assembly about safety might be good. Frankly, Professor Stillman didn't think this would be effective. He said that part of the probem is that the security guards who are supervised by the NYPD do not answer to us but to PS. 125. He said perhaps its better that the case be made to the local precint that now that there are 3 schools we need additional guards. Parents asked whether Professor Stillman wanted parents to make calls to the precint about this. Professor Stillman said for now calls from parents were not necessary.Another parent asked whether Columbia could help at all with extra security. Professor Stillman also indicated that its important to distinguish between hardened criminal behavior and normal adolescent behavior. There have been negative intercactions between CSS students and students of the other schools in the building. Perhaps things will get better since PS.125 will no longer have a sixth grade next year. Profesor Stillman indicated that he would followup on the guard situation.

Problemas de Seguridad

Adam Stern hablo sobre un incidente que le ocurio a el y a otros padres cuando salian de CSS el dia de la pasada reunión de padres. Habian unos adoloscentes faltando el respeto y amenasando a los adultos. Los padres presente preguntarón que se puede hacer para asegurar que nuestros niños esten seguros al salir de la escuela especialmente esos dias cuando se quedan en la escuela tarde para trabajar en proyectos. Algunos padres sugerieron que seria bueno tener alguien del NYPD hablarle a los niños en asamblea sobre como mantenerse seguros. Francamente, el Profesor Stillman opino que esto no seria eficaz. El dijo que parte del problema es que los guardias de seguridad los cuales supervisa el NYPD no responden a nosotros sino a PS 125. El piensa que quizás seria mejor presentarle el caso al precinto local que como hay tres escuelas en el edificio se necesecitan más guardias.Algunos padres preguntaron si el necesita que los padres llamen al precinto. El dijo que por ahora no. Otro padre pregunto si Columbia podria ayudar con más guardias. También han habido interaciones negativas entre los estudiantes de CSS y las otras escuelas en el edificio. Quizás las situación se mejore porque el próximo año PS. 125 no tendra sexto grado. El profesor Stillman dijo que el estaria al tanto de la situación con los guardias.

PUERTO RICO TRIP:

On June 7, Da Vinci and a few students from other halls will be traveling to Puerto Rico via American Airlines. The cost is $1,100 per student. Family

contributions are expected on a sliding scale and honor system basis. Dr. Maldonado is having a separate meeting with the parents of the students going on the trip.

Viaje a Puerto Rico

El 7 de Junio Da Vinci y algunos otros estudiantes de los otros grupos viajaran a Puerto Rico por American Airlines. El costo es $1,100 dolares por estudiante. Se espera que las familias contribuyan al costo del viaje bajo un systema de honor y de acuerdo con el ingreso de la familia.

ACADEMIC AWARD CEREMONY:

There will be an award ceremomy and dinner on June 26 right before the end of school. The ceremony is intended to be black tie. It will be part catered and part potluck.Families who do not want to contribute a dish will be asked for cash donations. Dr. Maldonado needs many volunteers to help with the planning of this award ceremony beacause he will be away for a good part of June with the students on the Puerto Rico trip. At the ceremony,there will be a program with advertising ,chamber music,a dais, and hopefully the presidents of Columbia University and Teachers College will attend.

Ceremonia De Premios Academicos

El 26 de junio habra una ceremonia para ortorgar premios academicos a los estudiantes. Sera una ceremonia formal. Se va a ordenar comida y también se va a pedir que los padres traigan comidas de sus casas. Se le pedira a aquellas familias que no quieran cocinar que hagan una donación en efectivo. El Dr. Maldonado necesita muchos voluntarios para planear esta ceremonia porque durante la mayor parte de Junio el va a estar en Puerto Rico con los estudiantes. En la ceremonia va haber un programa con avisos, musica clasica, un dais y se espera que los presidentes de Columbia y Teachers College atiendan la ceremonia.
