OLD BUSINESS:

Asuntos Viejos

Book Fair

$1600 was raised; however, CSS will receive 20% of the $1600 for a total of $315. The question was raised whether to leave the money in the Treasury or to use some of the proceeds to file for non-profit status, which costs $1200.00. Those in attendance voted instead to deposit the $315 in the PA bank account and to transfer the $1200 from the CSS credit card to pay for the processing fees to achieve non-profit status.Someone asked if we can use the money to purchase books from Amazon.com for the new CSS library. The faculty has a wish list. Adam Stern opined that the money should be kept in the PA Treasury. This view was seconded by Sara Workman.

Se recaudo $1600; pero CSS recibira 20% de $1600 para un total de$315. Se pregunto si se deberia retener el dinero o dejarlo en la cuenta y usar una parte de el dinero para obtener el status de corporación sin fines de lucro. Correction Made to January 15, 2008 Minutes - Fundraising Ideas

Should correctly read as follows: Various fundraising ideas were discussed. Some ideas were another bookfair in the spring, a spring creative arts spectacular and a raffle. Adam Stern pointed out that the sound system is a problem in the gym when we have big events and that it would be worthwhile investing in better sound system or putting such events in a smaller space and/or the auditorium to get better sound. Parents also discussed what other types of things PA funds would be needed for. Some parents said they could be used for programs like SAT prep, Latin instruction, creating a handbook for new families, a potluck for new families, etc. Damaris Padilla agreed to draft and bring to the meeting draft letters for parents to use when soliciting gifts for the raffle.

Corrección al acta de enero 15 de 2008 - Ideas para recaudar fondos

Deberia leer: Se discutieron varias ideas para recaudar fondos como otra feria de libros, un espectacular de artes en la primavera y una rifa. Adam Stern noto que el sistema de sonidos en el gimnasio es un problema cuando tenemos eventos grandes y que valdria la pena invertir en un sistema de sonido mejor para cuando tengamos eventos grandes o poner esos eventos en un lugar más pequeño o en el auditorio para tener mejor sonido.

Los padres también discutieron para que otras cosas se necesitarian fondos del PA. Algunos padres dijeron que fondos del PA se nececitarian para cursos como SAT prep, instrucción en latin, crear un manual para las familias nuevas ,etc. Damaris Padilla acordo en formular dos cartas que las familias puedan usar cuando esten solicitando regalos para la rifa.

After School Parent Survey

A questionnaire was designed by Adam Stern but it had yet to be translated into Spanish. Professor Dominguez was approached to translate; however, due to the birth of his baby he did not have the time. However, Dr. Maldonado commented that a person has been hired to translate. Miriam will forward the questionnaire to the new CSS hire to be translated from English to Spanish. It can then be forwarded to the parents.

Encuesta Para Programa de After School

Adam Stern formulo un questionario pero todavia no se a traducido al español. El profesor Dominguez iba a traducirlo pero no pudo porqué recien habia nacido su bebé y no tenia tiempo. De todas maneras, el Dr. Maldonado comento que se ha empleado una persona para hacer las traduciones. Miriam le enviara el questionario a esa persona para que lo traduzca del inglés al español. Despues sera enviado a los padres.

Concerns About The CSS Webpage and email

Parents expressed concerns about the webpage and e-mail. Rather than create workshops or seminars for parents who were having difficulties navigating the CSS webpages and helping them to learn to send email, Professor Stillman created an assignment to ask the kids to ask the parents in a sort of interview about their computer skills. Unfortunately, there was no follow-up regarding ongoing computer concerns for family members.

Adam Stern suggested that a letter, in paper format, be drafted to speak to the following:

only nine parents attended the January PA meeting;

more input is needed from more of the parents;

if parents feel they need a workshop/seminar to help them navigate the CSS webpage as well as to feel more comfortable using email then all they need to do is request it;

the Target and Chuck E. Cheese fund-raising ideas;

SLT Parent Representative Elections (parents can nominate themselves); for those interested in nominating themselves they should make it a point of attending the April PA meeting; parents will be able to vote with their email; and those elected must commit to being a SLT Parent Representative for the remainder of this school year as well as 2008-09

The letter will be sent home in the kids backpacks.

Problemas Con el Uso de La Pagina del internet y email

Algunos padres hablaron sobre sus problemas cn la pagina de CSS y el email. En vez de tener talleres o clases para padres que estan teniendo dificultad navegando las paginas del internet de CSS y ayudandoles a aprendaer a mandar e-mail, el Profesor Stillman creo una tarea para ayudar a los padres en forma de una entrevista sobre sus abilidades con la computadora. Desafortunadamente, no se ha mantenido al tanto sobre los problemas de computadora que las familias estan teniendo al momento.

Adam Stern sugerio que se escribra una carta a los padres hablando sobre lo siguiente:

solamente nueve padres atendieron la reunión del PA de enero;
se necesita la participación de mas padres;
Si padres piensan que necesecitan un taller/clase para ayudarles a navegar la pagina del internet de CSS y para sentirse más comodos usando el email entonces deben pedir ayuda ;
padres representantes del Equipo de Liderazgo (SLT) (padres pueden nominarse a si mismos); para aquellos interesados en nominarse deben atender la reunión de abril;padres podran votar por email; los elejidos deben comprometerse a ser representantede padres del SLT por el resto del año y para los años 2008-09;
La carta se enviaria en las mochilas de los niños.

Non-Profit Status

$1200 is needed to process the paperwork. It is important to have the CSS PA established as a non-profit so that any contributions and donations made can be tax-deductible. 11 in attendance voted yes to approve the $1200 to begin processing the paperwork. There were no “no” votes and no abstentions. The January 2008 PA minutes were approved. It was also noted that the CSS PA is incorporated by New York State as a business.

Status Sin Fines de Lucro

Se necesita $1200 para procesar los papeles. Treasury Report

Victor Acosta reported that there is currently $594.71 in the PA Treasury. The money that was raised as part of the Bank Street Bookstore Sale is forthcoming.

Fundraising

Noemi Abreu reported on the following two fundraising ideas:

Target “Take Charge of Education”

As CSS is already registered with Target (thanks to one of our parents), any parent who shops at Target with their Target credit card, will have 1% of their purchases donated to CSS. The check will be sent directly to CSS from Target.

Chuck E. Cheese School Fundraising Event

CSS can participate in a fundraising event with Chuck E. Cheese. A date would be identified, and those who wish to attend could do so, and a portion of the proceeds raised from the event can be donated to CSS. There were concerns that the children may be “too old” for Chuck E. Cheese. In light of this, feedback will be solicited from the children if they are interested, a date and time will be selected, and those children and their families will attend the event. Miriam will send prospective dates; the date can be put on the web. Kids and parents can decide if they want to attend.An email will be sent to solicit responses, ie, “Special Night for CSS at Chuck E. Cheese”. Miriam will wait for more information from Noemi. Dr. Maldonado suggested that the Student Government can get involved. It was also suggested that perhaps other restaurants in the neighborhood be approached to host a similar event. A list of local restaurants/businesses will be put together and approached; Miriam and Biiftu will work on this .

Recaudar fondos

Noemi Abreu reporto sobre dos ideas par a recaudar fondos. Las dos son:

1. Target "Take Charge of Education"

Como CSSesta registrada con Target, gracias a uno de nuestros padres, cada ves que uno de nuestros padres compre en Target con su tarjeta de credito de Target ,Target donara en efectivo el 1% de sus compras a CSS. El cheque sera enviado directamente a CSS de Target.

2. Evento para recaudar fondos de Chuck E. Cheese

CSS puede participar en uun evento para recaudar fondos con Chuck E. Cheese. Se puede identificar el dia que seria y los que quieren atender y se donaria una porcion de los fondos aCSS. Algunos presente penaron que nuestros ninos estan muy mayor para Chuck E. Cheese. Por esta razón se solicitara información de los ninos para ver si estan interesados, se escojera una fecha y las familias que estan interesadas atenderian. Miriam madara un e-mail con fechas posibles; se puede poner la fecha en la pajina del web CSS. Los niños y padres pueden decidir si quieren participar.

Miriam va a esperar obtener más información de Noemi. El Dr. Maldonado sugerio que el gobierno de estudiantes podria estar envuelto. También se sujerio que quizás se deberia hablar con otros restaurantes en el vecindario para ver si estan interesados en participar en un evento parecido.Una lista de restaurates posibles sera redactada por Miriam y Bifftu, la hermana de Bilfay .Se hablara con estos restaurantes. Miriam y Biiftu trabajaran en esto.

Student Leadership Team (SLT)

The question was raised about how many parents are needed. Dr. Maldonado reported that one parent representative from each grade is required, per the DOE, and the PA President is also required to be on the SLT. Dr. Maldonado would like to invite one or two additional parents as well.Since we are one grade, it was determined that three parents would be sufficient to serve on the Student Leadership Team. The SLT will have weekly meetings with Dr. Maldonado. However, the issues was raised about election protocols, so it was determined that an election would be held to elect the three parents. Damaris Padilla, Candy Gulko and Adam Stern have already expressed interest as potential candidates.

It was recommended that a full election would be needed and would have to take place at a “full-blown” PA meeting, and that this meeting would have to take place as immediately as possible. Some parents wanted to know if we had to have an open election, could parents drop-off votes, and whether should we have a Town Hall meeting. A letter about the elections will be drafted and sent to Dr. Maldonado the next day (March 12); translated, and in the children’s backpacks the next day. It was decided that nominations must be received one week after the letter has been sent home. The also was a question regarding the function of the SLT. A blurb will be written by Dr. Maldonado defining the function and inserted into the letter to be sent with the children. Parents can vote via email or hard copy.

The question was raised if parent members should serve for a two-year term. It was decided that the time/term limits can be adjusted. The important thing is to ensure that it was a fair and participatory process. “Continuity is important”. The representative must commit to this year and the next. The goal of the SLT is to have one parent representative per house for a total of three (3). There will be an election of additional parent representatives in the fall 2008 from the new sixth grade class. Representative parents who are elected must commit to meeting once per week with Dr. Maldonado on either Mondays at 6 pm or Wednesdays at 6 pm until June.

Equipo de Liderazgo de la Escuela (SLT)

Se pregunto que cuantos padres se necesitaban. Dr. Maldonado reporto que según el DOE se necesitaria un padre representante de cada grado

y la presidenta del PA también tiene que ser parte del SLT. Al Dr. Maldonado le gustaria invitar uno o dos padres más. Como tenemos un solo grado, se determino que 3 padres seria suficiente para servir en el SLT. El SLT tendra reuniones semanales con el Dr. Maldonado. Se pregunto sobre el protocol par las elecciones y por esa razón se determino que se necesita una elección para elegir a tres padres. Damaris Padilla, Candy Gulko y Adam Stern ya expresaron interés en ser candidatos.

Se recomendo que una elección completa se necesitaria en una reunión amplia del PA., y que esta reunión tiene que llevarse acabo lo mas pronto posible. Los padres querian saber si tenemos que tener una elección abierta, si los padres podrian dejar sus votos en la escuela y si deberiamos tener un "town hall " meeting? Una carta sobre las elecciones sera escrita y traducida por el Dr. Maldonado y se enviara en las mochillas de los niños el proximo dia ( el 12 de marzo) . Se decidio que las nominaciones tienen que ser recibidas una semana despues que se envie la carta.También hubo una pregunta sobre la función de SLT. El Dr.Maldonado incluyira un párrafo con la definición de SLT el la carta que se enviara a la casa con los niños.

Se pregunto si los padres representantes deberian servir por dos años . Se decidio que los terminos pueden ser ajustados. Lo importante es asegurar

que el proceso sea justo y participatorio. Es important tener continuidad. El representante tiene que comprometerse para este año y el proximo. La meta del SLT es tener un padre representante por salón para un total de tres . En el otoño del 2008 habra una elección para un padre adicional del nuevo sexto grado. Los padres representantes que son elegidos deben comprometerse a attender una cita a la semana con el Dr. Maldonado los lunes o los miercoles a las 6.pm. hasta junio.

Photo Day – April 4

It is on the CSS calendar. Volunteers are needed to assist. There will be a conflict the same day as a sex education workshop will be held the same day. Organization will be key to ensure that all the children have their photos taken and have their attendance in the workshop; it is “doable.”The question was raised if the photo packets arrived. There was a bit of uncertainty. Professor Stillman volunteered to check.

Dia de Fotos--4 de abril

Esta en el calendario. Se nececitan voluntarios par ayudar. Habra un conflicto con un taller de educaión sexual. La organización es muy importante para asegurar que se pueda retratar a los niños y que al ves los estudiantes puedan atender el taller. Se puede hacer. Spring Arts Spectacular – Friday, May 16

The children will be presenting a program of dance and poetry, similar to a Pot Luck Dinner last fall but a bit more elaborate.

Spring Book Fair and Performance – Saturday, May 17

The event will be at the Lincoln Center Barnes and Noble from 2-4 on the third floor. Miriam will be signing the contract with Barnes and Noble to make it official. Dr. Maldonado suggested that a cultural calendar be built into the regular calendar with links to cultural resources. He also suggested that it be a project for the Social Studies class. He will speak with Professor Jones about it.

Sara and Roselle asked, “What can the PA do to support the Student Government?”

The Christmas Dance, although well attended, needed more parental involvement. Chaperones were helpful but more parents are needed with the organization and cleaning. It was recommended that the children need to take more responsibility. However, perhaps a Parent Advisor is needed to act as Student Activities Coordinator. It was decided that the need existed for a Student Government Parent Liaison to be available during the day (lunch time) on Monday afternoons.

One or two parents were needed to attend the lunch meetings. Dates in advance would be helpful as well; it was learned that many had trouble sending universal emails to all the parents. The correct email address is parents@columbiasecondary.org or parentsalternate@columbiasecondary.org Any information sent should be in word or a PDF format.

There will be one more party for the remainder of the school year, as well as two pool parties and two dress down days. No dates have been confirmed.

Feria de Libros y Actuación de Primavera

Este evento se llevara acabo en el Barnes and Noble de Lincoln Center de 2:00 pm. a 4:00 p.m en el tercer piso. Miriam firmara el contrato con Barnes and Noble par hacerlo oficial. El Dr. Maldonado sugerio que se incorpore un calendario cultural en el calendario regular con conexiones a recursos culturales. También sugerio que esto sea un proyecto con la clase de ciencias sociales. El hablara con el Profesor Jones sobre esto.

¿Sara y Roselle preguntaron, "Que podemos hacer para apoyar al gobierno de estudiantes?

Aunque fueron muchos estudiantes al baile de Navidad se necesitaba más ayuda de los padres. Fue util tener acompañantes pero se necesitan más padres para ayudar con la organización y la limpieza. Se recomendo que los niños tomen más responsibilidad. De todas maneras quizás se necesite un padre consejero que sirva de Coordinador de Actividaes Estudiantiles. Se acordo que se necesita un Liaison Para el Gobierno de Edtudiantes que este disponible durante la hora del almuerzo y los lunes por la tarde.

Se necesita uno o dos padres para que atiendan las reuniones durante la hora del almuerzo. Seria bueno saber las fechas de estas reuniones de antemano porqué muchas personas todavia tienen problemas cuando envian e-mail a todos los padres. Habra una fiesta más este año y dos fiestas de piscina además de dos dias de vestir sin uniforme. No hay fecha todavía para estos dias.

Parent Survey Committee Needed

Dr. Maldonado has asked that a Parent Survey Committee be formed to solicit feedback, per the DOE, on school operations, with Dr. Maldonado as the leader.Logistics presented a problem. The question was raised if we should send a meeting or should it be done through the PA? A box of surveys have been received by the DOE and are in the administrative office. The surveys need to be distributed and collected. A mechanism needs to be in place to follow-up with those parents who have not responded. Hall parents can be utilized to make calls, number each survey; they can also be sent home in the kid’s backpacks with a self-addressed stamped envelope, or the surveys can be distributed and collected at the May 16 Spring Arts Spectacular event. A suggestion was made that the kids use the opportunity to raise money by hosting a third dress-down day and the children in turn, would “lean” on the parents who have not submitted a survey.

El Dr. Maldonado pidio que se forme un Comite de Encuestas para obtener información de los padres ,como requiere el DOE, sobre las operaciones de la escuela. Se pregunto si hacemos esto mediante al PA o si se necesita una reunión. Una caja de questionarios del DOE se recibio y estan en la oficina administrativa. Los questionarios tienen que ser recogidos y distribuidos. Se tiene que buscar una manera para ver cuales padres los eviaron o no. Los padres representantes de los salones pueden hacer llamadas.También pueden enviarse en las mochilas de los niños con un sobre con dirrección y sello o los questionarios podrian ser distribuidos yrecojidos el 16 de mayo en el Espectacular de Primavera. Se sugerio que los niños usen la oportunidad para recudar fondos par un tercer dia de "dress down" y asi los niños pondrian presion a los padres que todavia no han sometido el questionario.

Fall 2008 New Class Admissions Update

700 children applied; however, the applicant pool was heavily distributed towards District 3, which is on the Upper West Side. The goal, per Dr. Maldonado, is the same: to have the same number of kids from each district. Unfortunately, there were not as many children with high scores from other districts.

CSS admissions goal is to recruit more CSS parents from Districts 4-6 to actively outreach and recruit. CSS would like to have more applications from children who live in Districts 4 and 5 for the 2009-10 academic year. The PA will be asked to help by building relationships with current fifth grade teachers in the elementary and parochial schools in these districts to help them identify and target kids from District 5 with appropriate academic levels. The idea was raised to have teachers from these districts nominate children, and also, to have Open Houses for these children with the goal to have 100 applications from each district. It is preferred by all that the “applicant pool be balanced.”

300 children took the essay on March 1 and they are half-way through scoring the essays. On March 30, Dr. Maldonado will be making phone calls to the families to let them know their children are “finalists”. Families will have until May 1 to decide whether their child will attend.

La Nueva Clase del Otoño del 2008

700 niños aplicaron, sin embargo la mayoria de las aplicaciones fueron del distrito # 3 que esta en el oeste del alto de Manhattan. Según el Dr. Maldonado la meta es tener la misma cantidad de niños de todo los distritos. Desafortunadmente no hubo tantos niños con notas altas de los otros distritos.

La meta es reclutar más padres de CSS de los distritos 4-6 para que se pongan en contacto con mas padres de estos distritos . A CSS le gustaria tener más aplicaciones de niños que viven el los distritos 4 al 6 para el año aademico 2009-2010. Se le pedira al PA que ayude con esto formando relaciones con las maestras en las escuelas elementarias y católicas en estos distritos para que identifique niños del distrito 5 con los grados academicos apropiados. Se ideo que maestras de estos distritos nominen a niños y también tener "open houses" para estos niños con el proposito de tener 100 aplicaciones de cada distrito para que asi haiga un balance en las aplicaciones.

El uno de marzo 300 niños tomaron el examen y se han correjido la mitad de estos examenes. El 30 de marzo el Dr. Maldonado llamara a las familias par dejarle saber que sus hijos son finalistas. Las familias tendran hasta el 1 de mayo para decidir si su niño va a atender la escuela.

New CSS Building Steering Committee

Parents will be needed to participate in the Steering Committee for the new CSS Building. At least two CSS Parents who are architects or have expertise in architecture would be helpful.

Nuevo Comite de Edificio de CSS

Se necesitan padres voluntarios para que participen en el Comite de Edificio de CSS. Seria util conseguir por lo menos dos padres que sean architectos o que tengan experienca en arquitectura.
