Chairity 2008 Finalists Raise $425 for Non-Profit Organizations
Students didn't believe it was possible. To build a chair out of reused cardboard (using no adhesives) that could support the weight of an adult seemed impossible enough. That their product could be auctioned online and sold to raise money for charity was beyond comprehension. "Who would want one of these things?" many students pondered as they wrestled with their designs. As it turned out, this year's surviving chairs were able to fetch a pretty sum.
Over the winter holiday break, students spent time researching various charities, looking into the missions of these organizations and reflecting on the social problem(s) addressed. The $425 raised this year goes to the following student-selected charities:
- $200 for The Circle Race-Chair goes to UNICEF
- $55 for Paradise on the Beach goes to the South African Red Cross
- $50 for The Curve goes to The Bowery Residents Committee
- $30 for The Airlifter goes to UNICEF
- $30 for The Rockin' Chair goes to Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS
- $30 for The Thrown goes to The Robinhood Foundation
- $15 for The War vs. Peace Chair goes to Save Darfur
- $5 for The Stronghold goes to Heifer International
- $5 for The Relaxer goes to The American Red Cross
- $5 for The Thing goes to UNICEF
