APPROVAL OF MINUTES

The minutes of December 11, 2007 were read and thereafter approved by the parents present.

Aprobación de los minutos

Se leyeron los minutos del 11 de diciembre del 2007 y fueron aprobado por los padres presente.

TREASURER

Victor Acosta, Eva Luna's, father was voted Treasurer of the PA by the parents present.

Book Fair

It was reported that pproximately $1600 was raised by the Bank Street Bookfair. Bank Street informed us that we could take that amount as a store credit or get the cash. Dr. Maldonado suggested we take the credit so we could buy books to stock the classroom libraries. However, the parents present felt its was better to take the cash and get discounted books from Amazon or other booksellers that give discounts because Bank Street does not discount. A motion was made by Adam Stern and seconded by Judith Rosario to donate $600 of the Bookfair proceeds to the school to buy books for the classroom libraries.This motion was voted on and passed unanimously by the parents.

Feria de Libros

Se reporto que aproximadamente $1600 fueron recaudado en la Feria de libros de Bank Street. Bank Street nos informó que podemos recibir este dinero como credito o en efectivo. El Dr. Maldonado sugerio que aceptemos el dinero como credito par comprar libros para los salones de clase. Pero los padres presente decidieron recibir las ganancias en efectivo par a así poder comprar libros descontados en Amazon.com o otras tiendas que descuentan por que Bank Street no descuenta. Adam Stern hizo una moción para donar $600 dolares de los fondos recaudados a la escuela para que compren libros para los salones. Judith Rosario respaldo la moción y los padres votaron unainamente para darle esa suma a la escuela.

Meeting Notices and Weekly Calendar

At the meeting of December 11,some parents present suggested that a written weekly calendar and written minutes and notices of PA meetings go out to families via backpak. Many parents,however, and some members of the administration felt that this would be too burdensome and a waste of paper given that all families currently have computers and that a full calendar and schedule of minutes is listed on the CSS website for all families to see. They felt that as we are an enviornmerntally concious school we should try to convince all parents to check the CSS website and e-mail everyday so that they always know what's going on. The by-laws require written notice. It is unclear whether this means it has to be in paper. It was suggested that we contact Professor Stillman about possibly conducting a workshop in the near future for parents and families who are still having dififculty using the g- mail , the CSS parent page and other features of the CSS website.

Notificación de minutos

En la reunión del 11 de diciembre algunos padres presente sugerieron que se mande en las mochilas de los ninos por papel escrito un calendario semanal, notificaciones de las reuniones y los minutos de las reuniones. Pero muchos padres y miembros de la administración piensan que esto es demasiado trabajo y un gasto de papel porque todas las familias tienen computadoras y el calendario completo esta en la pagina del internet de CSS que todas las familias pueden ver. Piensan que como somos una escuela que esta conciente del ambiente debemos tratar de tratar de convencer a los padres que miren as la pagina del internet de CSS todos los dias y que lean su e-mail todo los dias para enterarse de todo lo que esta pasando. Los by-laws de CSS requieren notificación por escrito pero no esta claro si esto quire decir por papel. Se sugerio pedirle al profesor Stillman que de un taller par alas familias que todavia necesitan ayuda con , el g-mail ,la pagina de los padres y los otros features de la pagina del internet de CSS.

After School Parent Survey

Adam Stern drafted a an after-school program questionnare to determine parents interest in an afterschool program at the school other than the afterschool clubs and electives already in place. After getting getting feedback from parents on the draft questionnare ,Adam will send this out to families in order to determine their interest.

Encuesta Sobre After-School

Adam Stern escribio una propuesta encuesta para determinar el interes de los padres en tener un programa de afterschool además de los clubs y "electives "que se estan ofreciendo ahora. Despues que reciba las reaciones de los padres sobre la encuesta, Adam enviara la encuesta a todas las familias pare determinar su interes.

Fundraising ideas

Various fundraising ideas were discussed. Some ideas were another bookfair in the spring, a spring creative arts spectacular and a raffle. Adam Stern pointed out that sound sytem is a problem in the gym when we have big events and that it would be worthwhile investing in a better sound sytem or putting such events in a smaller space and/or the auditorium to get better sound. Parents also dicussed what other types of things PA funds would be needed for. Some parents said they could be used forprograms like SAT prep, Latin instruction, creating a handbook for new families, a potluck for new families,etc. Damaris Padilla agreed to draft and bring to the meeting draft letters for parents to use when soliciting gifts for families.

Ideas Para Recaudar Fondos

Se dicutieron varias ideas para recaudar fondos. Algunas son tener otra feria del ibros en la primavera,tener una feria de arte creativa en la primavera y una rifa. Adam Stern noto que el sistema de sonido es un problema cuando tenemos eventos grandes en el gimnasio y y que tendria sentido inventir en un sistema de sonido mejor o tener los eventos en otro lugar como en el auditorio. Padres tambien discutieron para que se usarian fondos del PA. Se podrian usar fondosdel PA para programas como SAT prep, enseñar latín, crear un manual para familias nuevas,etc. Damaris Padilla acordo escrbir unas cartas para las familias solicitando articulos para la rifa.

501(3) (c) Status

A motion was made by Adam Stern and seconded by Judith Rosario that $500.00 of PA funds (?) be set a side to pay a service to do the paperwork to get 501(c) (3) status. Getting this status is important so that donations to the PA can be tax deductible .The motion passed unanimously by the parents present.

Adam Stern hizo una moción que fue respaldada por Judith Rosario para donar $500 de los fondos del PA (?) para pagarle a una agencia para que prepare los papeles para coseguir status del a ley 501 (3) (c).Obtener este status es importante porque así las donaciones al PA podrian ser deduccidas de los impuestos por los donantes.La mocion paso unanimemente por voto de los padres presente.

Recess /Social Concerns

A lively discussion was had about students needing recess to release energy and the feeling that students need a break during the day. Parents also spoke about addressing students social needs. Parents asked professors Nalley and Stillman how advisory does or does not address some of these social and other personal concerns. We also discussed what role guidance counselors, school psychologists and social workers could play in a small school like CSS. Professors Nalley and Stillman concurred that advisory is able to address some of the more general social, ethical,and philosophical issues that students might have, but that in the future and as our student body gets larger we might need to bring in some additional personnel to deal with some of the more specific personal needs that children that may have. CSS might also consider how Delores Eng, the school secretary, who has a masters in social work, could help with this in the near future.

RECESO/ASUNTOS SOCIALES Y MENTALES

Tuvimos una discución animada sobre la necesidad que tienen los niños de ir al receso durante el dia para gastar energia . Padres también hablaron sobre como se puede tratar con los asuntos sociales y personales de los estudiantes. Se le pregunto a los Profesores Nalley y Stillman como el grupo "advisory" trata o no trata con algumos de estos asuntos sociales y personales. También discutimos que papel podrian emplear consejeros, psicólogos, yt rabajadores sociales en una escuela pequeña como CSS. Los Profesores Stillman Y Nalley acordaron que el grupo "advisory" puede tratar con algunos de los asuntos sociales, éticos,y filosóficos mas generales, pero que en el futuro cuando la escuela tenga más estudiantes necitaremos traer mas personal profesional para tratar con las necesidades mas personales que tengan los estudiantes.CSS tambien podria considerar como usar los talentos de Dolores Eng la secrataria de la escuela que tiene una maestria en trabajo social.
