After School Enrichment

Fall 2007

Afterschool electives and Afterschool study and tutoring periods

Afterschool electives are optional courses, study and supervised homework periods that take place within the 4-6 m on Tuesday and Thursdays only. These programs will begin the 3rd week of classes. Sign-up will begin during the second week of classes. For the courses student will need to sign-up and commit to the whole semester. These are regular courses, with grades and specific academic expectations. Students taking extra courses in the afterschool program may be released from taking in-school electives in other middle school years.

Afterschool study and supervised study - Meets Tu-Wed-Th from 4:10-6:00 pm

Student may show up on a need basis to get help with core course assignments, to work in team projects and group presentations, or to get subject specific tutoring. Hosted by Teachers College and Columbia University students. To secure a space, CSS students must sign-up on a AS Tutoring/Study weekly sheet in the Principal's office. First come first serve, only 20 students per session will be allowed in. In addition to supervised homework and individual or small group tutoring, students may use the computers and internet service to do research, print out papers, and other academic tasks or co-curricular activities (e.g. student clubs and government activities). Students must be studying or independently reading at all times (this is not a glorified daycare!)

AS Courses: Architecture -  Meets Tu/Th from 4:10-6:00

The Architecture course will introduce and explore the design process and the graphic representation of our built environment.  The students will design their own classrooms and in the "doing" learn the technical and procedural components of architecture and design, and mechanical drawing.  The hands-on approach develops the skill of visual literacy and encourages the students to see themselves as designers in their own right as they engage in presentation of their completed design and critique those of their peers.
