      Approved CSS/PA Minutes for December 11,  2007

Old Business:

Miriam mentioned that communication and on occasion the lack thereof between the administration and families was a large part of thediscussion at last PA meeting on November 20th. She mentioned that Dr. Maldonado and Professor Stillman had made changes to the CSS website to deal with some of these concerns. It was also stated that the greeting card fundraiser was put off for the spring. It was the consensus of the parents at the last meeting that fundraising should not be the main focus of the PA but that community building should play a bigger role as we are a new small school (just 95 families) and need to grow as a community. Families should, however, e-mail their ideas to the PA Board about the role of the PA so that the PA can formulate a mission statement for the PA. Parents also spoke of having a fair in the spring when we get back from the holiday.

Miriam menciono que la comunicación  o falta de comunicación en ocasiones fue una gran parte de la discución en la reunión del 20 de noviembre. Ella dijo que el Dr. Maldonado y el Profesor Stillman hicieron cambios a la página del internet de CSS para tratar con estos asuntos .También se dijo que la venta de tarjetas se aplazo para la primavera . Los padres presente en la última reunión  acordaron que el recaudar fondos no deberia ser el foco principal del la Asociación de Padres y que constuir a la communidad de CSS es mas imporatnte porque somos una escuela pequena (95 familias) y necesitamos crecer como communidad .De todas maneras familias deberian notificar por e-mail a la junta ejecutiva de padres para expresar sus ideas sobre el papel que debe emplear la asociación de padres par que podamos formular una declaración sobre el proposito de la asociación.

Bank Street Book Fair:

Parents asked about the results of the Bank Street Book Store book fair. It was mentioned that the results of the fair were not yet available but would be in a few days.

Feria de Libros del Bank Street Book Store:

Padres preguntaron sobre los resultados de la Feria de Libros del Bank Street Book Store. Se menciono que todavia no se sabian los resultados pero que se obtendiran pronto.

Book Lists and Wish Lists:

It was suggested that that teachers post their book lists and wish lists directly somewhere on the CSS website so that parents can purchase these items for the classroom. Permission would have to be obtained from Dr. Maldonado and Professor Stillman. A motion to create such lists on the CSS website was passed unanimously by those parents present.

 Listas de Liros y Deseos:

Se sugerio que los maestros pongan sus listas  de libros y deseos  el la página del internet de CSS para que padres que vean la lista y puedan comprar esos articulos para el salon si desean. Habria que pedirle permiso al Dr. Maldonado o al professor Stillman para hacer esto .Una moción para poner estas listas en la pájina del internet de CSS fue pasada unánimente por los padres presente.

Notice of PA meetings, minutes and weekly calendar:

Several parents stated that meeting minutes must go out in hard copy to all families and then be available at parents meetings for review. Also a written notice of the general meeting and agenda must always be sent in advance of the next general PA meeting. It was the feeling of some parents present that the more notice people have the more likely they’ll come out for the meetings. The by-laws require written notice of all meetings and minutes. It was suggested that these also be put on the CSS website. Parents also discussed with Professor Stillman about having a weekly written calendar of events go out to parents by backpack to keep parents informed of events on a weekly basis. Board members expressed concern that they need help in getting notices out to all families Malaga Baldi agreed to help the PA Board distribute the meeting notices and a weekly calendar of events from Professor Stillman in hard copy to all families via the backpack folders.

Notificación de Reuniones, Actas y Calendario Semanal

Varios padres dijeron  que las actas de las reuniones de padres deberian ser enviadas por escrito a todas las familias y estar availables en las reuniones. Además notificación de la reunión y la agenda de la reunión deberia ser enviada antes de las reuniones. Los padres piensan que si son notificados de esta manera mas padres atenderian las reuniones. Los by-laws requieren que notificación de las reuniones sea por escrito. Los padres también dijeron que las actas de las reuniones deberian aparacer la página del internet de CSS. Padres también le dijeron al Professor Stillman si seria posible mandar en la mochilla un calendario semanal de eventos. La junta de padres expresso que necesitaria ayuda para mandar los avisos. MalagaBaldi acordo ayudar a la junta distribuir los avisos.

CSS School Building Plans:

Parents asked about the plans for the new school building and the Columbia University expansion. Some parents read that the expansion was approved. Others had heard that it was not. It was suggested that parents check the Columbia University website to read the news about the expansion, including the plans for the CSS school building.

Los Planes del Edificio que se va a constuir para CSS :

Los padres preguntaron sobre los planes para le esceula de CSS y la expansión de la Universidad de Columbia. Algunos padres oyeron que los planes  para la expansion habian sido aprovados y otros que no. Se sugerio que los padres visiten la  página del internet de la Universidad de Columbia para mantenerse al tanto de los planes del edificio para la escuela a y la expanción de la Universidad.

Vacant Positions on the PA Board:

There currently exist open positions on the PA Board. The positions of Treasurer and Co-Vice president are open. Parents were asked to run for these positions.

 Posiciones Vacantes en la Junta de la Asociación de Padres:

Al  presente hay dos posiciones vacantes en la Junta Ejecutiva de la Asociación de Padres. La posición de Tesorero  y de Co-Vicepresidente .Se le pidio a los padres que corran para estas posiciones.

Portfolios:

In response to parents concerns about finding out about how their children are doing before receiving the progress reports, Professor Stillman stated that the administration is considering sending home a portfolio checklist of completed works on a weekly or biweekly basis so parents can check what work is missing and how their children are doing.

En respuesta a las preocupaciones de padres que quieren saber como estan hacienda sus hijos antes de recibir el reporte de progreso, el professor Stillman dijo que la administración piensa mandar un “portfolio checklist” de las tareas completadas cada semana o cada dos semanas para que los padres sepan cuales son las tareas que hacen falta y como estan hacienda sus ninos.

Family Night:

Some parents spoke about community building through Family Nights as had been suggested at a prior meeting by David Suker. Family Nights would be announced outings that families could participate in or not like movies, bowling, etc. These would be opportunities for families to get to know each other.

Noche de Familias:

Algunos padres hablaron de construir la communidad de CSS por medio de Noches de Familia como sugerio David Suker en una reunión anterior. Noches de familia son dias de salid a(peliculas de cine ,bowling,) en las cuales las familias de CSS podrian participar si quieren. Estas serian opportunidades para las familias conocerse mejor.

5 Days a week after school: Sandra spoke about the interest that exists on the part of many families to have a five day after school program at CSS. Such a program could be designed and run by CSS with funds raised by the parents or it could be run by a community based organization(CBO) on site. The CBO option would probably be less expensive. Professor Stillman expressed his and Dr. Maldonado’s concern about whether a CBO would have a quality program with the type of challenging programs that they envision for CSS students (for example a quality robotics program).Parents agreed that the 5day after school idea is worth exploring further. Parents agreed that the first step is to devise a needs survey and sent it out to parents to determine how many families are interested, what type of programs families want, etc. Sandra Echols agreed to devise the survey. Thereafter the meeting was adjourned.

Afterschool 5 dias a la semana:

Sandra dijo que familias estan interesadas en tener un programa despues de la escuela los cinco dias de la semana en CSS. Tal programa podria ser diseñado y administrado por CSS o podria ser administrado por una agencia comunitaria (CBO) que traiga su programa a CSS. Utilizar un CBO seria menos caro. El Profesor Stillman dijo que el

 piensa que el Dr. Maldonado tendria reservaciones  sobre si tal CBO podria proveer un programa de calidad como los que el quiere para los estudiantes de CSS (por ejemplo un program de“ robotics” de calidad). Los padres presente estuvieron de acuerdo que se debe explorar la idea mas afondo .También acordaron que el primer paso seria hacer una encuesta para determinar cuantas familias estan interesadas y que tipo de programas les interesan. Sandra Echols acordo formular la encuesta. Despues la reunión se termino.
