CSS-MSE obtains two grants to support science and study abroad programs

CSS-MSE secures two grants to support existing and new programs

I am happy to announce that our main partner Columbia University is transferring to us a start-up grant in the amount of $150,000 to support our first year of operations. This grant complements in-kind contributions, technical, public relations and administrative support, and furniture and equipment donations that the university has contributed over the last year. These funds will be used to support existing co-curricular programs and the June – mini-semester study abroad courses Island Biodiversity - Puerto Rico, the interdisciplinary WATER, and ARCHITECTURE IN THE CITY courses.

Prof. Hill and Prof. Pietro have obtained a $36,000 grant from the EPICS program at Purdue University, to support the development of a science leadership and environmental stewardship program. The STAR (StudenT AmbassadoR) program will promote an interest in sustainable development service projects that respond to the needs of an urban environment. Students from CSS-MSE will work with other middle schoolers from Harlem and Upper Manhattan to research local environmental problems and develop and implement community service projects. As part of the program CSS-MSE will develop and offer an Environmental Stewardship course within our science electives offerings, and host a summer environmental leadership seminar with workshops and hands-on activities designed to train students to assume leadership roles and effectively disseminate understanding of local environmental problems.
