Rosalind Franklin is prominent in virtually every telling of DNA history, but she is painted differently in various accounts. Watson and Crick made one of the most important and impressive scientific discoveries of the 20th century, but their golden helix is tarnished by the way they have treated Franklin and Wilkins. A meaningful gesture, given that it was Franklin's data that Watson and Crick most directly used, would be for scientists to refer to the "Watson, Crick, and Franklin structure for DNA."

Student Government Officers Meet With NYCDOE School Food Executives

Written by Noah Sclar, 6th Grade
On 5/11/10 the CSS student government met with the Manhattan Regional Director, Cathie Condon, and the Director of Food and Food Support, Stephen O'Brien. These executives were invited because the student government was thinking about switching the Styrofoam trays that we all use in the lunchroom to biodegradable trays. We were aiming to reduce the amount of space that we take up in a landfill by switching to these trays. In our meeting the student government learned that, according to O'Brien's research, the biodegradable trays don't actually biodegrade in the conditions of the landfill. While we were disappointed to find this out, we now know that there is another alternative. We can increase the use and recycling of paper trays, preventing them from going to the landfill. The student government will be following up with Ms. Condon and developing next steps for improving the menu and recycling practices in the cafeteria.
